The Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS) is seeking focused, hard-working individuals for the position of Third Mate aboard our ferries.
This is a year-round position with two-week rotational assignments. As a USCG-licensed deck officer (unlimited tonnage), you will serve in a supervisory role responsible for navigation, communications, oversight of unlicensed deck crew, passenger safety, and overall vessel operations.
Third Mates are assigned to the bridge immediately and work alongside experienced AMHS officers, gaining the hands-on training and mentorship they deserve. Come aboard and experience what it’s like to pilot a ship through Alaska’s breathtaking coastal waterways.

Required Certifications
Candidates must hold a valid U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) endorsed with the following:
STCW Endorsements (per 46 CFR Part 11):
- Basic Training (VI/1)
- Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch (OICNW) (II/1)
- Proficiency in Designated Security Duties (VI/6)
National Endorsements:
- Third Mate – Oceans/Near Coastal (Unlimited)
- Lifeboatman
- Radar Observer – Unlimited
Additional Requirements:
- Valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC)
- Current DOT Drug Test result (dated within the last 6 months)
- Valid USCG Medical Certificate with STCW section (must show valid 2-year STCW date)
- Valid State Driver’s License
Desired Knowledge & Abilities
· Knowledge of operations protocols for the vessel, crew, passengers, and cargo.
· Understanding of deck operations, including cargo management, deck maintenance, and coordination of supplies.
· Ability to maintain charts and operational checks on the navigation equipment.
· Working knowledge of safety protocols and emergency survival equipment.
