The nature of the work performed onboard the ships requires able-bodied personnel who can endure long hours and being away from shore for extended periods of time. Merchant Mariner positions have a specific set of required documents for work that can lead to a lengthy recruitment process - 4 to 6 months on average if no documents to start with.

Relocation may be necessary if you are not living in Alaska due to rotational aspect of the work assignments. For most crew, commuting between home in Lower 48 and change ports in Alaska is not a financially viable option. Your ability to navigate the web and use computers effectively will be essential during the recruitment process and also while employed.
